I think the majority of any kind of music at any particular time can be shown to suck. Today's country? Dwight, Steve Earle, Patty Loveless, Emmylou, Junior Brown...you just have to choose judiciously. Because the whole genre was new, some of the old stuff sounds more distinctive, sure, but that is no reason to trash a whole generation which has produced a lot of excellent music. Just gotta get away from CMA!
