This is a demonstration of my Retrobox, the retro gaming setup I have built. Retrobox is an all-in-one emulation console built on a windows 7 system and running the HyperSpin frontend. Retrobox can emulate 46 systems and offers 15125 playable oldschool games. I did this just for fun, because I love oldschool games so much -- even though it eventually evolved into a huge and serious project :)

PROJECT HISTORY

In early 2009 I started working on a retro gaming setup for myself with a simple goal; to have all emulatable console, handheld and arcade games playable through HyperSpin. And all these consoles and games were to have at least a wheel, cover and video. When realizing how much work this was, I created a thread on the Underground Gamer (UG) forums describing my goal and announcing I would, once done, release my work as a torrent there - as an effort to avoid others redoing what I was doing. It didn't take long until people noticed my project and began offering help, making the project a collaborative effort of many UG members.

A lot of work goes into getting a console completely done; checking game namings, matching, making sure nothing is missing and adding extra games that might be missing. And that's just the beginning. Then there is creation of missing content; wheels, covers, videos, themes and various specific art as well as making everything work. When the original UG HyperSpin project was finally done and released in 2010 it was, at that time, the most complete HyperSpin setup avalible. But it wasn't until late 2011 that my personal setup really was done with 4 customized controllers and a wooden box and so on. By December 2011 the HyperSpin project torrent has over three thousand downloads -- if you are interested in enjoying a similar setup like in my video, register an account and get yourself a copy.

CURRENT PROGRESS

In 2010 UG member dvdj decided to start a new HyperSpin project; The UG HyperSpin Project 2.0! This time taking everything one step further with a new team consisting of some of the original UG HyperSpin project team members and a lot of new UG members. The goal of this project is to make everything even more complete, fix errors and improve and add new material as it is found. The project also aims to add even more new systems to the project; consoles, handhelds and this time around even computer systems - never seen in HyperSpin before. Everything will soon be available on UG.

WHAT IS HYPERSPIN AND EMUMOVIES?

HyperSpin is a frontend; a menu system to navigate through your games collection from one convenient interface. With HyperSpin you can organize your games, launch your favorite emulators, PC games and other software and have fun while doing it! Hyperspin is probably the best frontend out there. It supports a lot of eye candy for your favourite game systems. HyperSpin allows for every console to have its own menu (sub-wheel). Every game's representation consists of three things; a cover for the game, a logo of the game (wheel) and a video of the gameplay. Some consoles have aditional material like CD scans, carts and so on. Hyperspin-fe.com has a lot of content freely avalible, and work in progres material is avalible on their FTP.

EmuMovies is a project that started in 2005 to create video previews of video games to replace static screenshots in frontends like HyperSpin. Since 2005 the collection has grown to well over 10,000 video game previews for Arcade, Console, Handheld and even Computer based game systems. High quality video and audio instead of a static snapshot really makes the whole experience much more engaging and entertaining. Emumovies offers all finished videos freely in SQ. Members get access to videos in crisp HiQ on their FTP and all the work in progress content.

Combining HyperSpin and Emumovies truly is the way to go to get the best possible retro gaming setup.

  • Are these the free basic themes you got from Emumovies and hyperspin or are you a member and these are some paid themes.

  • @Tw1tchNES There are no paid themes :) But almost all themes are either done or modified by me.

  • "I do not support or condone"

Actually, most of the games you have do not apply anymore, since the original game isn't really available anywhere else its considered vaporware/abandonware

  • @MichaelxDavid I'm not 100% sure about the rules, but still - for the games where it applies hehe ;)

  • UG is maxed out for users, any other way to Download the torrent?

  • @Jochitko I now have the files I need. There are people actually selling HDDs with an almost complete set of videos, themes and roms over the net if you know where to look. I got mine from a friend who managed to get them all downloaded and did a transfer onto my portable HDD. Thanks for an awesome project!

  • @RobbieHct Use Win 7 64 Bit, or else you might get compatibility issues with some emulators. And the song is röyksopp - happy up here :)

  • @RichardsScott Sorry, you'll have to get into torrents in order to get the content :/ If getting into torrents is too hard you'll probably need to get someone to help you out with setting this up anyway.

  • @battlechasers I don't sell the project, I never intended to profit off of it :/

  • @RobbieHct You are welcome. check your inbox ;)

  • @hydrael1 thanks for the reply. ive been spending the last week or so setting this up. ive just about got everything perfect, except for ps1 games. thatll be during this week. im using windows xp sp3, and everything is running great!
