A motorized treadmill is easy to use -- just step on and walk, jog or run your way to your fitness goal.

Whether that goal is to increase your cardiovascular fitness or train for a marathon - the versatile treadmill does it all.

The key difference between many treadmills is the power of the motor. Motors are rated in Horsepower. A higher number gives you more power. The most accurate measurement is the Continuous Duty Rating. That's the minimum amount of horsepower a motor will deliver at any point during a workout. Again, a larger number is better.

If you like to read or watch TV while you exercise, then a larger, more powerful motor that operates at a lower RPM's will be quieter.

Next, consider the belt. Some models allow you to customize the firmness of the cushioning to match your workout. A good mix of firmness and cushioning will protect your knees, ankles and back from injury as you exercise.

The speed of the belt is varied according to your workout routine. Some models can run as slowly as one half mile per hour. Some can go as fast as 12 miles per hour.

The length of the running surface should match your stride. This can vary from 45 to 60 inches in length depending on the model.

Most treadmills offer features that allow you to keep track of your fitness progress and keep you from becoming bored as you exercise.

Some treadmills offer speakers and a connection for your music player. Others offer a fan to keep you cool.

To help you optimize your work-out, most models offer heart rate sensors built into the grips and some have a wireless heart rate receiver.

The console displays the information you'll see during your workout. Most offer time, speed, and distance and calorie readouts while other models add heart rate and incline. Some models allow up to 16 pre-programmed exercise routines as well as downloadable programs from a USB memory stick.

A video interface is available on some models. You can watch moving scenery synchronized with your exercise program... a great way to stay motivated!

Most models can be inclined to intensify your workout. On some models, the incline is easily adjusted by a motor as you exercise. This makes it easy to add more variety to your program at the touch of a button.

Treadmills can take up a lot of floor space when they are in use, but most can be at least partly stowed away by folding up the deck. Some models also have hydraulic shocks to make folding and unfolding the treadmill easier.

Other models fold down so they can be stored under a bed.

All treadmills offer a safety switch that signals the treadmill to stop gradually.

If you will be using the treadmill regularly, or if there will be multiple users, then consider a treadmill with a more powerful motor and a more comprehensive warranty or In-Home Repair.

Manufacturers can offer up to a lifetime warranty on the frame and motor.
