This is the opening theme from the 1983 Japanese film, "Nankyoku Monogatari" ("South Pole Story", but better known by the title of "Antarctica"), composed and performed by Vangelis.
The film, directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara, is based on a series of events that occurred during a Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1958. The expedition had been abandoned due to poor weather, but in the process left behind the entire team of sled dogs. It was hoped that a later expedition would retrieve them, but this never happened. About one year later, the expedition members, fearing the worst, were surprised to discover that two of the canines, Taro and Jiro, had amazingly survived. (Sadly, the other thirteen dogs did not did not.) How Taro and Jiro managed to survive is a mystery, but they were regarded as heroes in the years that followed.
The film stars Ken Takakura as scientist Akira Ushioda, and Tsunehiko Watase as fellow scientist Kenjiro Ochi.
"Nankyoku Monogatari" was Japan's highest-grossing local film of that particular year, earning about ¥5,900,000,000. However, some concerns were raised regarding the treatment of the film's canine performers due to the realism of some scenes, and the director had to publicly explain that no animals had been harmed in the production of the film, and that any scenes in which they appeared to be were achieved through the use of special effects.
In keeping with the film's Antarctic setting, the video itself consists of some photos of Antarctic scenery, ending with a photo of a statue of Taro and Jiro, and a DVD cover for the film.
