This riddle song dates back a long time. Like many riddle songs, the riddles themselves are not too difficult to work out. Here, to pad the song out a bit, they sang words that sounded like they might be 'Latin' such as would be spoken by the priest in church, but really they are just doggerel. This I learned from the BBC Radio Broadcast 'Singing Together'.
