Hey Canada!
Thanks for watching my submission...please take a moment to rate, and if you like the video, add it to your YouTube 'Favorites'...(Oh, and sorry about the wind during parts of the presentation, it's that fabulous October Waterloo breeze...)

My name is Kevin Royal, I'm 23 years old and I live and work in Waterloo, Ont., where I am the President of the Federation of Students, the University of Waterloo's student union.

My one big idea for the 'Canada's Next Great Prime Minister' contest is an unprecedented investment in research and technology in Canada. With big investments from our Federal Government, Canada can be a world leader as a knowledge and intellectual economy.

This idea is manifested through a number of programs
- A big investment in PSE funding, including a renewed focus on math, engineering, and science.
- Public-Private research partnerships, fuelling innovation and research
- A 'TechJobs' program for youth encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation.
- A tax cut for Corporations based on their investment in research and technology
- A cross-Canada network of 'Innovation Centres' to encourage entrepreneurship and fund new innovation and research.
- A matching cross-Canada network of 'Sustainability Offices' to encourage environmental awareness and green programs.

It is my belief that this sort of investment will yield dividends; new techniques for agriculture that protects our food security, innovations in health care to help our sick, and creating a long-lasting expansion by strengthening our economy.

My inspiration was the success seen by the research and technology boom in Waterloo (named the world's Most Intellgent City/Community - http://www.intelligentcommunity.org/) and how that spirit of innovation can be extended across Canada.

Fire me your thoughts at pres@feds.uwaterloo.ca
Best wishes,
Kevin

  • hey kevin. some great ideas man. wary about tax breaks for corporations because they might take the money and invest in their own industry *outside* canada. most companies are international or american conglomerates and may not be interested in investing in canada. thats why i like your focus on canadian universities: grow our own talent. good luck man...i'll keep watching.

  • In high school there were always comments about you going this far. Good Luck.We need people to step out of their every day shells and develop new ideas for the drawn out ones we use today. I am mostly concerned with the environment though. I am a true believer that without the environment there is no need for anything else, like business or technologies. The earth is what we live off of and most people don't seem to get that. I hope you can bring that across to a lot of people. Thanks.

  • You did very well on the contest.

  • Waterloo is way too in love with itself.

  • Everyone is such an environmentalist sickening -.-

  • GET A WIRELESS MIC!

  • I like the vision Kevin.

Green is obviously a very hot topic currently and you cover it very well, not just talking about how we have to because it is the right thing to do, but also how we should because of tangible benefits.

It is a good approach that is already being taken, but I have little doubt that you would expand and broaden that approach.

  • Kevin,

I support you 100% and have always thought you'd make a superb Prime Minister! Best of luck, I appriciate your head strong clear mindedness. Leaving no room for Canada to be lackadaisical about important issues, Great Job!
