Just an example of what 45ipm rapids looks like on a Sherline. Note the 12" ruler for scale. I have the Sherline 18" Extended Mill Table. It makes working on longer material so much easier!

Uses Gecko 201 drivers, 48V switching supply, and Vextra PK264-03B motors. The 'B' means dual-shaft, and the 3 means 3 Amps. Software is TurboCNC.

The motors are only 68 oz-in holding torque, but as you can tell, they accelerate great. Plenty of end-mill snapping power at low speeds as well.

See http://www.microstepping.com/

You might notice that I don't do diagonal moves. It can do diagonal moves, of course, but the straight line moves allow the non-moving axis to be powered off. I have auto-axis disable on my breakout board.

Also you might notice that the aluminum is flexing. I forgot to put a spacer underneath the far end.

  • Cool. You seem to have your ramp speed slow, well at leat slower that I have it set on my 5400 mill. Thanks for sharing.
