What Does It Mean To Be Transgender?

Question:
hi! this is an akward question and i hope you dont get offended or anything because thats not my intention. but i was just wondering if you could explain the transgender thing to me. does that mean that you were born a girl, as in physically and everything, but you are mentally and emotionally a boy? or is it more complicated than that? and are you attracted to boys or girls? its never really been explained to me properly so i thought i should educate myself. i just want to understand:) :) :) :)
