In response to timebomb555: It's a matter of style. I'm not an expert, but the high step is generally used by what might be called "show bands." It originates from high school and college pep bands/marching bands in which the primary function was for entertainment at football games. The glide step comes from the military/drum & bugle corps tradition. These groups were stand-alone, associated with the VFW, American Legion, etc. Many high school and college marching bands have adopted this style.

That, is a very good question. Keep asking, and come back in a day or two, when we have highlights of Miami marching bands to show. Very different.
