  • can someone tell me what "venetoi prasinoi" means, please?

  • @JUMANJIHEADBANG Venetoi = blues. Prasinoi = greens. Back in Byzantines cities, they were sports "teams/parties" or "representatives" (lack for better words) for competitive sporting events such as chariot racing, etc. They started out as purely for sports, but pretty much became political parties.

Someone can probably explain this far better than I can, but that's the gist of it.

  • There were 4 CIrcus teams in Constantinople. Each team had some racing chariots for the Circus races. The 4 teams were:

    Venetoi (Blue)

    Prasinoi (Green)

    Leukoi (White)

    Rusoi (Red)

At 1st they were something like F1 racing teams.

The most important ones were the Blue and the Green.

Blue were suported by the Aristocracy and Green by the labors.

Those two racing teams used their influences and became de facto political parties.

Sometimes they had their own "Security" forces as well.

  • @HaldirOfLorien

To sum it up, think of a medieval greek mafia that had the guts to try dethroning an emperor

  • @999ILIVEBYMETAL666 no Βένετοι means also blue

  • @999ILIVEBYMETAL666

sorry, man, haldir is right.venetoi actually means blues.the relation with the italian city-state is just a coincidence.check out the wikipedia.

  • @HaldirOfLorien thank you very much!

  • Search wikipedia for the Nika Riots. It pretty much sums up what happened with Venetous (blues) and Prasinous (greens)
