SLY CD reissues out now! The first seven albums are remastered, expanded with extra songs and essays, in deluxe digipaks! Hurry, before the limited run sells out forever!

SIS & the Family Stone!:

Everybody knows the Family Stone had three Stewart siblings -Sly, Freddie, and Rose- but younger sister Vaetta (Vet) had her own group as well. Vet paired up with Mary Rand and Elva Melton as Little Sister. They sang back-up for the Family starting in 1970 before making singles of their own.

Sly's fans know there was a long wait between the epic "Stand!" album (1969) and the Funk-defining masterpiece "There's a Riot Goin' On" (1971). In between were several dazzling slngles, including a few for Little Sister. Both their songs, You're the One" and "Somebody's Watching You", charted in the R'n'B Top 10 that year. It's probable that Sly is playing everything on them as well as writing and producing on his Stone Flower label. This is the first use of a drum machine, the famed Rhythm King, on a hit song. Crucially, these singles previewed the Riot album's new sound a year early; if that LP defined the path of modern Funk music, then these singles were its first steps.

Vet was recently hurt in an auto accident. She's recovering, but why not send her a get-well line at this address:

  • Who's on bass in this track. It reminds me of some of the stuff on Fresh and Riot. I'm thinking it's Sly, but could be Rustee?

    PEACE

  • From what I've read, it's all Sly on the instruments. The tough, dry sound of the bass came from plugging it directly into the mixing desk.

If someone knows better, please pipe in...

  • The group was not just Sly's little sister (My auntie Vet), but also the lady in the middle, Elva "Tiny" Mouton is MY mother and the lady on the end is Mary Rand-Russell- who went on to have a wonderful solo career and married Rock legend Leon Russell. Thats my family, and I am very proud of the work they did and the influence they had.

  • Thank you (for clearing that up)!

It's great that we can finally give due to each of these great ladies like they deserve! It's a family affair, ya'll...

  • @jackienjordan How is your Aunt Vet doing? I remember her from elementary school in Vallejo, Ca. My best friend at the time "Donna" was her "God-sister". Vet was a few years older, and anytime "Donna" had a problem we would run to Vet to solve it since she was a little older (LOL).

  • @hollidayevery, Walter Hawkins was their original pianist, also DJ Rogers. The group often performed with James Cleveland and state wide gospel concerts.

  • @hollidayevery , yes this is true. The group was a gospel group called the Heavenly Tones. The group was developed out of Ephesians Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, CA. This was the church that Bobby Hutton's funeral was held at. Anyway, Tramaines grandfather Bishop E.E. Cleveland was the pastor. There were 6 girls in the group...My mother Elva bka Tiny Mouton, Mary Rand, Vet Stewart, Tramaine (Davis) Hawkins, Viveen Cleveland (the pastor daughter/tramianes aunt) and Adrienne Cryor.

  • @Eyemallfunkedup Hi this song is a few years before Rustee so my guess it's eithef Larry Graham or Sly.

  • badass

  • @jackienjordan thanx for sharing a little bit of the rich tradition of your family... RESPECT!

  • @jackienjordan I read in the info on the late Walter Hawkins that his Walt's ex-wife Tremaine Hawkins was in an early group with some of the Little Sister members, prior to their hits...Do you know if this is true or not?? Please reply if you know about this...I love the group Little Sister... The full length "You're the One" is one of my all time favorite jams!

  • Perfect! Thank you......sweeeeet!
