About the same as in the early 80's except the tpts were stronger back then. What's with the kid resting the entire fist three quarters of the tune? If you hold out for the high notes you'd better be an ox when it's your turn. The kid in the middle was the workhorse. Just as way back when the band looks like it's out to out-compete everyone else, not to make music. No joy...

Trumpet section pretty tight, but the lead wienied out on the upper-register stuff. I'm old now [55], but I had "double C" when I was a junior in high school. I toured and did studio work, but I gave it up to get married in 1973. Still miss the biz...

I remember the Buckinghams version of this tune; it's available here. They also played it slowly; two vocalists.

Absolutely. Cannonball played it slow and funky. The rock group The Buckinghams had a pretty substantial hit with this song summer of '67. Zawinul rocked!!!!

By the way, check out the Cannonball Adderly Quintet's version of this tune; Joe Zawinul, who wrote this tune, and who wrote it for Cannonball Adderly, and who played in that band, preferred that it be played slowly. RIP.

PCJB usually uses an upright bass because the instrumentation of the band mirrors the band of their mentor, Stan Kenton, who used 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones, string bass, etc. Only started using a guitar and vibes in the 90's. The band opened for Kenton in the old Lambertville (NJ) Music Circus many times in the 60's and 70's, and Kenton played several concerts and conducted workshops at the school during that time. They still use a big cymbal("Bertha") given (discarded?) to them.

The first tenor solo was sweet. i'm in my third year of alto. I like solo improvising too.
