Devínska Nová Ves is a small village on the Slovak/Austrian border.

I have always been fascinated with the village so I made a video to show some of the more interesting parts, with the some historical information included.

I also point out some interesting differences between New Zealand small towns, and Slovak small towns.

Some points of interest in this video are:
► The Lake
► Remnants of the Iron Curtain Border
► The Train Station
► Panelaky (State-built apartments)
► Devin Castle and the Danube
► Sandberg

I hope you enjoy the video, and I apologise for my bad Slovak pronunciation.

After visiting Devínska Nová Ves many times in the past, I moved here permanently in August 2011 with my Slovak wife.

*Correction: Slovakia was never formally part of the USSR, instead it was a Soviet "Satellite State".

  • Amusingly, I've read there was an experimental American version of a typical East Block panelhouse estate built in the southern US during the 1960s (IIRC). It didn't catch on. I kind of understand why. :-)) Though, to be honest, paneláks aren't twice bad if they recieve some necessary modernization and face-lifts, as you've already mentioned. Still, I've seen a few rare examples that were built in the 1970s-1980s and just reeked of obviously shoddy craftsmanship after a mere 20 years...

  • LOL your slovak pronunciation is totally fine :D even myself who lives here cant pronunce like you

  • That's not as extreme as Toronto weather.

This summer, it went up to around 50 degrees celcius (with humidity).

    Earlier, it dropped very low.

  • That is a very nicely done video. I'm always stunned that foreigners find beauty in some of the things I see as a blemish on Slovakia (panelaky for example). I become even more stunned when foreigners from countries like New Zealand willingly move to Slovakia. Did your Slovak wife force you? Lol! On the other hand I love going to Slovakia, love the nature and history, so from that perspective I can understand it. I love being there, but probably because I'm on holiday, not working. Lol!

  • I really like how interesting you found this part of the city which is in my opinion one of the most boring parts of Bratislava :) cheers for this video :)

Alright, sorry I didnt see that correction.
