The occult imagery and atmospheric production of Brisbane's amicably named Daterape will suggest filing under ordinary "witch house"; indeed, the Daterape font is pretty much a direct rip from Salem. But a close listen to the artist's Machaevol and Cold Remains EPs reveals something more individual and organic, rooted in mid-'90s downbeat dance and the ambience of Massive Attack or early Boards Of Canada. For me, this track evokes an image of exploration, a slow driftwood float over black waters in an unknown territory, at turns peaceful and tense. [altered zones]
