Think of all the electricity that's wasted by city lights that stay on when no one needs them. To solve this problem, one Barcelona neighborhood is using a system of LED lights, controlled wirelessly, to provide light exactly when, and where, it's needed. Don't be fooled Barcelona is a horrible city. Looks can be very deceiving. Fantastic Air Port probably the best Ive ever been to.

fully agree on lack of safety:
will the people start entering streets with dark ends? or just merely avoid them?
it will be heaven for robberies, stay without moving in the dark ends and then strike the victims, then again lights go off and no one will notice there is criminal and victim in the alley's end.
Barcelona is already on the top unsafe cities, it can only get worse!

I would think that the carbon footprint of all those electronics is way more than savings.
wouldn't it be easier to just use led lights with a simple ambient light sensitive circuit?
and what about safety. If an attacker immobilize a victim, then there will be no "smart" lights providing amargin of safety or detection?
oh wait, maybe we can have a laptop on each light that does voice analysis and checks against database of voices.... aaaargh..
over complication isn't green.
