  • Hi. I really enjoy these videos. I really want to get into composing. I've been looking at these scores and I can't help feeling a little lost, not knowing exactly what I'm looking for. I really want to take away some tricks from these composers Is there any way you could be more specific, going into the techniques these composers use? For example, like "in measure __ Debussy uses __ to create an especially __ kind of sound. Or "doing __ is usually used to create __ feeling in the audience"

  • @MikeyIV The problem is that defining orchestral tricks will make it too easy for you, and substitute for you being able to work it out simply by score-reading. There are literally hundreds of thousands of different ways to sound unique or momentous with orchestration. I can't define them all, or even begin to generally address the topic. So I really can't stress enough: score-read, score-read, score-read!

  • Thanks for the comment - I appreciate your enthusiasm.

In the case of Prokofiev, the situation is complicated by the Soviet bloc's lack of participation in international copyright conventions. If you examine the Dover score, you will see that no copyright is attributed to the estate of the author or to his Russian publisher. It is this, plus the fact that Dover generally prints public domain works, that suggests the conclusion.

  • @DMHR100 The Planets by Gustav Holst actually was an influence for John Williams!

  • yes this is pretty good

    russian composers

  • nice work!

  • I just watched this series, up to 4B. I'm an old 47, so I am somewhat familiar with all the scores you praise. But I never developed that precious inner ear; and that has forced me to face the music. ...For the younger folk, it's so important that they know how it all happened, orchestrally. You've helped thousands - even as they go off unhappy - wanting to write by inspiration alone. We are less ignorant, thanks to you. -sylvester ...I'd also add: It is critical to hear this music played live.

  • 08:36 - 08.51 Looks like John Williams's inspiration for Star Wars, just saying.

  • Thank you for making these videos! I value everything you have to say. I just can't wait till I start my composition lessons soon in college. Thanks again!

  • Prokofiev works will be public domain in 2023. 70 years after his death. Thanks for great videos! Very VERY inspiring
