An American Romance written by William Tell and mygirlcharlotte is an homage to director, Mike Nichols (Academy Award Winner, Best Director) for The Graduate (1967). Filmed on a budget of a mere 3 million, it grossed nearly 35 times that since its debut on December 21, 1967. Buck Henry, screenwriter, makes a cameo appearance at the Taft Hotel as the concierge. The small cast consisting of Dustin Hoffman, one of the most versatile actors of his generation, Anne Bancroft, Murray Hamilton and the lovely, Katherine Ross, and its themes of alienation, eros and ambiguity have been the subject of much discussion for years. I began watching this film over 30 years ago, have read both the novel and screenplay, and have never quite figured out what makes this film the masterpiece in the pantheon of cinematic lore which it remains. The American Film Institute has ranked it in its top ten list of its 100 greatest films. William Tell: vocals, guitars. Dennis Sulllivan: bass. Martin Beals: guitar. Jerry Trebotic: drums. Lyrics and music by William Tell. Iconic cinematic imagery from The Graduate is of fair use pursuant to 17 U.S.C. section 107 for nonprofit, educational and the most respectful purposes only.
