If you are new to mediation, this simple exercise is perfect as a place to begin. In performing these simple techniques you will discover the unique ways in which your own body holds tension and stress and how you can enjoy true relaxation any time!

The tensing/releasing technique is based on a stress management exercise developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobson in the early 1920's. In his work he found that PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION through this type of exercise could reduce anxiety as well as improve several health conditions. I used this technique first in 1984 as an undergraduate studying the psychophysiology of stress and in my experiment (presented at the Western Psychological Association conference later that year) the results showed that participants who practiced this were able to avoid the negative impacts of a stressful situation.
