The definition of metabolism is a set of chemical reactions that occur in organisms in order to maintain life. Metabolism also helps organisms grow, maintain structures, and respond to various environments. The basic function of the metabolism in an organism is to break down organic matter to yield energy, and then to create a variety of chemicals necessary for sustaining life. Some of the chemicals made from metabolic functions include proteins and amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and many more. When these components are all constructed the parts become essential for all living organisms to survive.

  • Sweet little pug!

Interesting you chose metabolism, since we're covering this topic later in the semester. It's good that you did some research on it but it doesn't connect very well to what we've studied so far.

Later in the semester you'll see that we focus on other aspects of metabolism, which I hope will be scientifically richer than the material you presented here, and with more of a context within the course material.

Metabolism is a characteristic of life-not an emergent property.
