There are many uninformed people [ including so-called "mestres" who should have studied capoeira's history but didn't] who say that "capoeira isn't to fight with". Capoeira was borne literally as a weapon of war and freedom against slavery and slavers and succeeded. It moved to the cities of Brazil as Maltas and terrified oppressors there,and capoeiristas became naitonal heroes when they dazzled Brazil in the war vs Paraguay.

@iamdragonborn Actually Capoeira is the result of a hybrid martial art that has its roots in Africa. As African warriors were captured and sold into slavery, their African martial arts made the journey with them. Pooling their martial knowledge in the crucible of slavery in Brazil,they crafted Capoeira about 500 yrs ago. @HugsmadeDrugs it comes from Brazil. Capoeira was created in the 19th century by African slaves, who had to disguise the martial art as a dance. Music provided by drums and other instruments help to set a rhythm for the game, which consists of two participants using acrobatic play as well as kicks, sweeps and head butts. The technique and strategy are key elements to a well-played game.
