Kruzenshtern - Крузенштерн
Class: A
Flag: Russia
L.O.A. 114.5m
Rig: Barque 4
Year Built: 1926
Home Port: Kaliningrad, Russia
Entered By: Baltic State Academy of the Fishing Fleet

Biographical Data:

Kruzenshtern is the second largest sailing ship in the world behind another Russian ship, Sedov. Originally called Padua, she was built in Germany in the 1920's as one of five clipper ships for the 'Flying P Line' which traded in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific. The five ships' names all began with 'P' and only Padua is still sailing. Pamir sank in a hurricane off the Azores, Peking ended up as a museum in New York, Pommern is alongside in Mariehamn and Passat is tied up as a youth camp with mast, but no sails, near the Kiel Canal.
Padua was awarded to Russia in 1946 and renamed Kruzenshtern after the famous Russian hydrographer and navigator. She is easy to recognise with distinctive black and white sides, common on ships that traded with the East, where the design imitated gunports to scare away pirates.

  • right, this doesn't look like Kruzenshtern.

First of all, it should be 4 masts.

Second, where are the front ones?

Third, if this is the video after they got 1 mast broken in the storm, it is the front one. Here, the 1st one is ok. :)

  • He is Krusenstern!!!

I removed this video in a city of Vigo, Spain.

Here the beginning of start of a regatta is visible. On video all masts are visible, only not on all there are sails!!!

  • Krusenstern was a German! He was working in Russia and Kaliningrad heisst Koenigsberg.Stolen from Prussia during the rape of eastern Europe in 1944-45.The SU called it liberation!

  • Yes, have constructed in Germany...

  • Video will soon be published Kruzenshtern sailing ship's visit to Oulu!

  • @nallepuh6969 :) Being word-abusive doesn't prove anything. If you read the entire thread, you'll see that some details in the video are a bit confusing and it does seem to be the 4th mast there, just without a sail. But I'm guessing your young age intolerance just makes you go out there and yell at people. Help yourself with negative energy, but please somewhere else, not here where people are polite.

    @tiniru1, thank you! :)

  • @nallepuh6969

Sorry, Nallepuh, but both Sedov and Kruzenshtern have exactly the same type of rigging - 3 equally high square rigged masts with coursers, double top and top gallant sails and royals and the last mast fore-and-aft rigged with split spaker. I have both ship's drawings on my desk and I can see Sedov and Kruzenshtern right now every day on my way to work. I think you should change your tone of voice a little and apologize to Jagilya. Good question here - who is stupid?

  • @tiniru1 The moist air makes it pretty much impossible to say if the ship has any white stripes or other markings on her sides. Btw Sedovs hull is almost as high as Kruzenshterns. I'd say that the rigging looks more like the Kruzenshterns, for the mizzen mast of that ship is visibly lower than her main mast. This is not the case with Sedov.

  • @WarbabyFox are you blind? Google maltese falcon and come back and tell me if it looks like the one in this video... jesus guys...

  • @Jagilya You know anyting about these ships??? Kruzenshtern is a 4 masted BARQUE, the second largest in the world. If you don't even know what the term "barque" means, you shouldn't come comment and show your stupidity. (barque, 2 or more square rigged masts at the front and 1 fore-and- aft rigged mast at the back)

  • @Jagilya @Jagilya

The vessel on this video is a 4-masted barque, but not Kruzenshtern. It is the Russian STV Sedov.

Both ships do have the same type of rigging, but Sedov has an all black hull and very low superstructure, whereas Kruzenshtern has a black hull with a black and white stripe and quite high superstructure.

  • Take a look at my production. You can find the Finnish army, the beautiful scenery of Finland, folk festivals, sailing ship "Sedov", martial arts, sports, huge Calvin Meat art school, animation, a lot of Super 8 films and others interesting!

  • @Jagilya If you look closely you will see that the spanker is set on the mizzen. By the set of her sail the ship is on a reach, therefore the spanker is only showing a very small profile to us. A real skill to sail them,
