Schadenfreude at Oktoberfest

This 'ride' at Oktoberfest, 2006 consisted of a circular spinning floor, padded walls, a big ball on a rope that swung at you and two guys whose job it was to otherwise remove you from the area. With "no beginning and no end" you could gloat all day with gleeful delight, watching people getting rope burns, bashed in the head and otherwise pummeled... which is the German's idea of a good time, since 1910.

"Nebenbei handelt es sich auch noch um eines der günstigsten Fahrgeschäfte auf der Wiesn, denn für einmal Eintritt zahlen darf man sich stundenlang als Zuschauer im Zelt aufhalten und sich auf Kosten anderer amüsieren."

Which translates: "Besides it still acts as one of the most favorable roundabouts on the Wiesn, because for one entrance fee you may be for hours as a spectator in the tent and amuse oneself at expense of others."

Clear cut. Self admitted. Schadenfreude.

Thanks for the memories. I first saw the Teufelsrad at the Hofer Volksfest in 1968.

One night the operator could not unseat the lone survivor with the tetherball. He dispatched a man with a lasso. The rider jumped through the loop and got free. Then they dispatched a second man with a lasso.

The rider jumped through both loops, grabbed the ropes, and pulled both men onto the wheel. The operator stopped the wheel and congratulated the rider as the two ropers licked their wounds.

The concept of Schadenfreude doesn't apply here, as there's no misfortune involved. The game is just about staying on the platform as long as you can.
