Adam: Hey Jackie, Hey Trina. This school Nova Southeastern University is
28,000 strong and I think half the school made it out here today
for college week on NBC6. We have got the cheerleaders and the
students are doing their fins up sign for the sharks. The basket
ball team is here, we even have a DJ. It is going to be a lot of
fun today, Ross is going to teach you a lot about what makes
this school so special, a huge educational program, also they
have a dental school that has helped save a lot of money on
their dental work, on top of that some students here get to
spend their time in class underwater. It is all coming up on
college week on NBC6. Rights now, let's go back into the studio
to today's news.
Jackie: And Adam will be tweeting from the campus throughout the 90 min
of news site you can join him using the hash tag #NSUON6.
Adam: I am Adam Kuperstein live at Nova Southeastern University in Davie,
I am going to show you how some of the students here at Nova
Southeastern University from South Florida beaches stay as
beautiful as they are. And you have got to see this, Joe Rose is
here for the sports, rights now he's working the DJ turntables.
I kid you not, Joe Rose is taking over the DJ table, that cant
be a good thing for Nova Southeastern. We will keep track right
after this.
Trina: You hear the music and you know it is college week. While
today's stock on the NBC6 college week tour takes us to Nova
Southeastern University.
Jackie: And guess who is there having a grand old time, Adam
Kuperstein, Hi.
Adam: Hey Jackie & Trina. It is a good time these students came out in full
force. I was just talking to some of the students who are
student government over here. You know Nova Southeastern
University 70+ on-campus clubs they have a lot of fun here. When
they are not in class they of course like to go to the beach and
spend time in the water. But listen to this there are some
students at Nova Southeastern University that actually do that
as part of their studies. Check it out.
A: These college students truly plunged into their studies.
B: We are going to study one of our coral nursery.
A: This is the video of graduate students at Nova Southeastern
University, they are part of the oceanography program and on
this day they are checking the condition of coral after tropical
storm Issac passed through.
C: Our coral reefs are one of our prime economic engines.
A: And that is part of the reason why Nova Southeastern University just
built this. The largest coral reef Centee in America in Dania
beach.
D: Anytime you are on the cutting edge of any type of experiment or
research it is very exciting.
A: Inside this Center of excellence for Coral Reef ecosystems research,
we found students examining the effects of the BP oil spill on
the stations. Other students are cultivating coral reef in an
aquarium.
Kerri: This is something that we would start with a Coral this size.
A: Keri O'Neil says they started with 50 small wants and now they have
250 the size of a basketball.
Kerri: I have worked in the aquarium industry for a long time and it
is something that I have always dreamed of; to be able to grow
corals and actually use them for restoration.
A: The students and professors at Nova's coral reef research Center love
what they do, but they also recognize how critical this
workplace all over the world; but specially here in South
Florida.
Kerri: Protecting our reefs means protecting our peaches from severe
coastal erosion and also protecting our fisheries and food
source and our tourism industry.
Adam: The Nova Coral Reef research Center has a grand opening coming up in
two weeks. It is a $50 million facility and is the largest in
the country it is something that we are proud of here at the
Nova Southeastern University.
