So, because of the scope of the project - I needed a total ripoff of double layer roofing on the old part of the house and new roof on the addition AND with a approaching snowy stormfront, I decided to contract the roofing job out after being visited by the nicest guy many times while I was working on the house asking me - Who was going to do the roof? Told me he was local and he and his partners could do a great job for a good price. Told him I already wanted to replace some sheathing on a small rotted section on the back of the house myself where a old exhaust fan and chimney were and the rot extended to near the new addition and if that doesn't bother him, they could take if from there. That was fine with him and the deal was made. I did my work the night before. (You could see that part in the previous video.) He told me they would replace any other rotted wood they find and started while I was at my day job. Didn't finish that day, which was good in a way. That night I wanted to look over their work hoping to get a warm fuzzy feeling but was majorly disappointed. That night I ended up tearing off some of the roof paper they already had stapled in place and replaced some sheathing with leftovers I had from the walls after calling the guy and getting nowhere. And the storm was on it's way. The next day they came to finish and the end of the video shows some of the stuff they were going to paper and shingle over. I got them to divert to another area enough so I could run to the local hardware, pick up a few sheets of sheathing and replace it myself after they said it was fine enough to roof over - just can't talk sense into some people. And trying to get them to do it over would take some major red tape. Someone later asked me - well does it leak? No, the top layer is all new but that's not the point. Shingles nailed into soft wood will not hold up to their ratings in high winds and the roof will probably fail long before it's longevity rating. Granted, there are a lot of top notch professionals out there who do a great job. I just picked the wrong ones. I did 4 shed roofs.. Yes a house is big but considering this experience - next time, if I'm physically able, I'll probably take a week's vacation and DO IT MYSELF...

  • The plywood is DELAMINATED, not ROTTED!! Get your facts straight.

  • Whatever you call it, it's not a good thing. My problem with it was that this was the only part of my renovations I contracted out and I was willing to pay for new wood but I wasn't even told it was bad. It was just covered over.

  • that's the nice thing about doing things yourself. At least you know for sure what you have, and how it's done. Nice project.
