(Exegesis means to read something as it is written. The antonym eisegesis means to read something into the context.)

Now don't take this video wrongly. This video is NOT saying that a godly man's opinion supersedes Scripture nor is it saying that if a godly man's opinion contradicts what the Bible says that a man's opinion would supersede it because of some "new revelation". What this video IS saying is that God has produced godly commentators over the years who have exposited the Lord's Word correctly and to simply ignore these commentaries ultimately leads to repeating errors that have already been made again. While I don't believe that a commentary on God's Word supersedes God's Word, I have read commentaries that have helped me understand it that much more mostly because of the fact that these commentators will actually point to another part of Scripture that adds clarity to the particular verse in Scripture being exposited. Always use discernment, though.

  • @goldstead: So what!!! If atheism is true then even the word stupid has no meaning. You may think so but your opinion is meaningless. We have more numbers. We win. Get over it.

  • A veiled egotism?.The Spirit will come and instruct you in all things,is the Spirit capable? The Bible is instruction for reproof instruction in righteousness Reading of commentary is a sign of laziness? Where gifts are does not eliminate exclusive instruction of scripture alone. Many in China are with Bible only.Yes, helps when possible. But not at the exclusion of possibility scripture is sufficient in itself. Mark declares in his teaching middles class teaching not capable for all; excluding.

  • @HermitintheRain As I finished sending this message the answer came swiftly from the book of Proverbs: the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. If, in humbling yourself before the LORD, you should seek after wisdom with all your heart, you will find it. Be it in your own reading, or in the hearing of a faithful preacher/teacher, according to the grace of the Lord, the Spirit will give you ears to hear and a heart to understand what the Spirit says.

  • It is clear that we need teachers and preachers to expound the Bible for us. What is becoming of greater concern is in how we might discern true teachers and preachers from false ones. Do we trust our own ability to know who is false and who is true? Upon what basis do we discern truth from error? The Bible is the truth; yet how do we know we are being taught the truth from the Bible-in our own reading of it and from what others are saying about it?

  • goldstead - there are six dominate worldviews in the west right now, Christian, Islam, Secular Humanism, Cosmic Humanism, Marx/leninism, Post modernism. When you understand these views and their impact on a culture there is no comparison. Christianity is hands down the most beneficial to all mankind, those who believe and those do not believe, than any of the rest. You should be more careful before hurling insults with such disrespect.

  • no, listen to criticism and learn from it

  • Your video message here reminds me of Philip explaining the Scripture to the Ethiopian Eunuch just as a good commentary serves to help us today to understand the Scripture. Good video.

    God bless.

  • Acts 8:30-31 : So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is a "picture" of our need for good commentaries and other good literature to help us understand the Bible and Church doctrine. Notice his humility and eagerness to invite someone else to help him understand what he was reading. This is great! :)

  • Christians exist all over the world, not just in America. We love our enemies as Jesus commands us; it isn't Christians who fly planes into buildings and set off roadside bombs. I don't know why you hate Christians and Americans so much, but it sounds like you have some serious misconceptions.

  • Wow, Americans just look so stupid when you start on your fundamental Christianity - mythical nonsense. Americans are as extreme as fundamental Muslims / AlQiada - you belong in the same room - as dangerous as each other.
