For anyone who cares this is my favorite of all of my performances on this site as of this time. The song was a way of taking every positive influence I have come across and throwing it into the kitchen sink in coming up this one. Where to start: 1) musically: Grateful Dead version of Morning Dew 2) Lyrically - All You Need is Love by the Beatles, What I Be by Michael Franti, Liberty by the Grateful Dead, Turn on your Lovelight (covered by the Grateful Dead, don't know original author's name), maybe even a Midnight Oil song called Maralinga ("there's only God, there's only Christ") 3) Deepak Chokra's book about Life after Death and a near death experience described - inspired the idea of Love as the central life force 4) other author influences are Ram Dass, The Dalai Lama, Alan Watts, Don Miguel Ruiz, Thich Nhat Hanh (all heroes of mine) - not to mention - 5) my own love relationship at home and the realization that the well comes from within first and is not dependent on any one human outside of one's own existence. I cannot turn to my wife to re-affirm my own self. The well to the source of all comes from my own heart first. Don Ruiz in Mastery of Love covers that to a T.
The song is not about being original, but more about digesting all of these ideas into something I can use as a musical affirmation. This song is a meditation. It is not a denial of the realities of hatred, hunger, sickness and pain that clearly exist in the world around us. It is more of a reminder that love is greater than everything, including those things. The hunger referred to is not hunger for food as much as the hunger of the soul, the hunger for love, sex, touch, the longing for a so called "soulmate" and the realization that the life force from within (connected to the higher power that runs through us all - whatever you want to call him/her) provides the ultimate answer to all of those desires.
Words written close to 1 year ago:
There's only love:
Don't seek the love - be the love
Be the wind, be the air, be the rays, shining down from above
Don't seek the light - be the light
Shine on others, seeking light, be a friend, be a love, be a (love)light
Don't chase your dreams, be your dreams
When life is pain, (rise above,) it is more than it seems
Don't be the pain, be gentle sweet flowing rain
Be the quenching soothing water, there is more, than your feelings, than this plane
(Chorus)
There's no fear, there's no hate - there's only love
There's no need, there's no hunger - there's only love
There's no sickness, there's no pain - there's only love
No separation, no distance - there's only love
Don't chase the desire, when you can go higher
Be the loving warmth you seek, be the sun, be the heat, be the fire
Don't resist fate, embrace the karma, free yourself from hate
Don't anticipate, what's now here, you got it now, you don't have to wait
Don't seek faith, doubt is illusion, become your faith
Be your spirit, be your god, be your goddess, be your lover, be your faith
Don't seek your soul, be your soul
Surrender to the darkness, to the light, lose the fear to lose control
Well - confession - many of the ideas are basically recycled form these same sources!
