Barry said he would never pout and give up a chance to go to the finals for any reason. He said the loss of Butch Beard was responsible for their loss in the playoffs.
Ah, the famous Rick Barry give-up game. Someone punched him in Game 7 and when he realized none of his teammates came to his aid, he went into the old Derek Bell "Operation Shutdown" and let his team lose.
Then to add insult to injury, he went out and found a nice toupee and did TV for the championship series when he was the reason his team wasn't playing in it.
Still remember hearing the result of this game on my transistor radio at 10 years old and being in absolute disbelief at hearing the score that the Warriors lost.
This was one of the most brutal losses in Warrior history. That was such a great team and they were so lackluster in the playoffs. They struggled against the Pistons and then blew this series. They probably would have defeated the aging Celtics. The franchise has never been the same since. I would love to watch this game in its entirety again. Rick Barry just gave up and the Suns seized the moment.
The Warriors lost game 4 in Phoenix in Double OT and game 6 by one point. This series should have never gone to a seventh and deciding game. True fact, this was the last game the Warriors ever played in a conference final. They have not returned to the Western Conference final since they lost game 7 vs. Phoenix in 1976. Really pathetic for a once proud franchise. It still blows my mind that the Warrior fans support this sorry excuse for a pro franchise.
It still hurts to watch this game. The Warriors were defending champs, and went 59-23 in the regular season. They were considerably better, with Rick Barry's scoring load lessened with the emergence of second year players Phil Smith and Jamaal Wilkes. The franchise recovered from this loss.
