Patty Duke Astin gives an extremely in-depth interview to Brian Linehan on this Toronto-based talk show from 1981. She talks about such things about tabloids, Jodie Foster, Tatum O'Neal, Kim Stanley, Al Pacino, Judy Garland, Anne Bancroft, doing the Miracle Worker remake, Patty McCormack, Valley of the Dolls, Susan Hayward.

I am missing the first part of this interview where she is discussing her latest role, that of a lesbian in the Toronto-filmed movie By Design. Thanks so much to Tony for this!

  • I love Ms. Duke, but I think sometimes people in the entertainment field forget they are in just that - the entertainment field. Not every film or production has to be a deep psychological profile of the characters, have higher philosophical principles or enlighten or solve the ills of the world. Sometimes all we want is sheer entertainment. That's what Valley of the Dolls was. You want to do those other things, stop being an entertainer and become a doctor or teacher or leader or whatever.

  • In the almost 30 years since this interview she has a totally different prespective on Valley. Check out the portions of her interview from the Castro Theatre in July where she attended a tribute to her/screening of Valley.

  • There's a few things I picked up from this interview. She never once discussed The Patty Duke Show, though she did go into some detail about her roles before the show. Also, she is so CLASSY and well-spoken. She's smart, yet down to Earth. Just the way she told those stories made me want to hear more. She doesn't yet seems at peace with her illness, since she was a year away from her bipolar diagnosis. You can tell by her eyes.

  • That is very insightful, SoulFan. I agree with you 100%!

  • Anna Pearce is so beautiful in this interview.

  • Patty Duke!! Love her movies. Great actress

  • Perhaps the biggest reason why she always bagged VOD in the past was the joint association with many things that she endured as a by-product her Manic Depression. Now, having conquered her demons, she can look back and smile.

  • I loved, loved, loved Patty Duke in every thing she ever did. I love her music. I'm just so sick that she was abused by her managers and others. How cruel Hollyweird greedy agents are - they are parasites that make their living off the talent of others. They themselves are worthless bloodsucker abusers who WILL pay for their crimes against others - either in this life or following.

  • Do you have the movie By Design?

  • Patty duke was the best singer and actress in the years 1964, 1965 1966 and 1967!!!!

  • A few years ago, I found Anna's fan site and was able to send her an email. Her reply came in a few hours. It was eloquent, gracious and very friendly. I wrote back once more, and she acknowledged it with another speedy reply. What a down-to-earth person! Anna's love for others is so immense that we all naturally feel it, and can't help loving her in return.

  • I, too, think Patty (Anna) Duke is a tremendous talent and great person...I also wanted to say I used to watch 'City Lights' and Brian Linehan was a fabulous, very meticulous interviewer

  • also i love her reaction when they play "dont just stand there" xD. she is so cute lmao! and I love that song, really great stuff.

  • I dont care what anybody says about Valley of the dolls, I love That movie so much! Patty was the best Thing about it, she was wonderful as Neely and I will always love that movie, no matter what people say.
