This is me playing through "Oil Tank Holiday", the first mission of Comanche: Maximum Overkill. This is a helicopter simulation of the (now-cancelled) RAH-66 Comanche. The game pioneered the "great graphics, low realism" characteristic that went into most of NovaLogic's games. The graphics were quite impressive for a 1992 DOS game (thanks to the then-pioneering voxel rendering engine), but the flight model is a bit lacking (for example, the collective acts as an altitude selector, changing your actual altitude instead of your rate of climb or descent). At the time, this game competed directly with Gunship 2000 (the only other major helicopter sim of the day), which beat Comanche hands-down in terms of realism and depth of play, but featured relatively flat graphics.

Filmed using the direct-to-AVI feature of DOSBox 0.65, and converted to a YouTube-compatible AVI with mencoder (which comes with MPlayer).

  • how did you manage to bring down the speed of this thing running in dosbox? mine was like crazy.

  • @busrel I didn't have that problem, but if you do, you can bring down the cycles in DOSBox by pressing CTRL-F11 repeatedly until the game reaches an acceptable speed.

  • Wow, this looks like a pretty cool game...despite the age.

Anyone remember SimCopter? That was an awesome game as well.

  • I remember SimCopter and the way it allowed you to fly over cities generated in SimCity. I know some people didn't like it because it was too simplistic and repetitive, and in some ways it was, but it was still a lot of fun for a while.

  • I remember having to create a boot disk on my pc to run it. 640kb was a pain...

  • Does anyone remember what the expansion for Commanche was called?

I miss this game. Hearing "target destroyed" brings back fond memories.

This game was a triumph for 92.

  • @TheRighteous123

    It's been 20 years!

  • I am glad I didn't buy Comanche Overkill, and instead got the 2.0 version that added better voxols, reflections and various multiplay options. If I had bought the first Comanche, I would have felt cheated!

  • @LateBlt

Not working though, the game appears to be glitching rather than being slowed down

  • the true landmark 3d games appeared before 3d hardware. biggest example of course being Doom.

  • CAN you tell me commands??

E makes you up , up key speed?

    and space fires.-----

    but fast fire???

  • I wish i could know the mission music it´s my favorite sound^^
