Rick Rubin ruining a record? riiiiiiight... lol
what a bunch o bs
great music is a living substance, and those who experiment deserve all my respect.
what we love today was considered a heresy at the time it first appeared. I'm thinking electric guitars, sequencers... heck, even the piano! yes, in the 1800's it was said that "the finger is not touching the string". Go figure. Now the problem is to much loudness? Let's learn to attain clarity AND loudness. It can be done. It has been done.Go Rik

@rasjvon Those albums were mixed and mastered well. I don't think Rick can be fully blamed for the loudness on modern albums. That all started around 1994 with people trying to make their album louder than the next guys.

@foketesz You don't understand the overcompression. Please research this a bit more.
CD's that hit the max headroom sound terrible. You need to keep about 6 dB of headroom and some dynamics in tact.
I would not ask them to change any of the music but mix the records at a sane level.

none of these had a say in the mastering, thats why its sent to a master engineer.

It's not the loudness that is the problem. It's when it's taken to excess like on Death Magnetic it becomes problematic. Rubin *has* produced great records, but lately he seems to have spearheaded a trend of pushing *EVERYTHING* above max, ruining both sound quality and dynamics. He is far from being the only one to it, unfortunately.
