The were used for locating space shuttle parts scattered over a wide area of Texas wilderness. They were much better than helocopters for the task both cost wise and minimal propwash disturbance of the discovered parts often found in the very tops of the forest canopy, Civilians donated their service for the search, and the military must have seen potential future applications.
Yeah well hopefully they won't be using them in combat! There must be a reason for them to be ordering them. I think it might be for recon in non-threat areas, like there is no AA or other fighter pilots. And the RC, like the Predator, would be much more expensive to buy and maintain than these.
That's what I want to know. The Buckeye Powered Parachute website says the military has ordered some of the paraplanes. I wouldn't want to be flying one in a combat zone. I'd be a sitting duck. You can use RC aircraft for recon.
I wonder what the military uses these for. A person would be awfully vulnerable in a combat theatre of operations in one of these. You could get the same kind of intelligence from a small drone aircraft with a camera.

We use UAVs that fly at 60k feet and can take a picture of the book you are reading and read the page you are on...no need to risk folks lives.
