The great german tenor Fritz Wunderlich sings "Nachtstück D 672"
op. 36,2 by Franz Schubert
Hubert Giesen, piano
Usher Hall, Edinburgh
04. September 1966
It was his last recital, he died few days later on 17.Septmber 1966

Johann Baptist Mayrhofer (1787-1836)

"O laßt ihn ruhn in Rasengruft!"
Der Alte horcht, der Alte schweigt,
Der Tod hat sich zu ihm geneigt.

  • A voice beyond compare...this track is my favorite of the whole recital

above all if one knows that he has died a few days later. There fits the text in a virtually macabre way.

  • beautiful, but why does he miss out two line of the song?

  • Unforgettable. I like the way the song is placed in the 1986 Schubert movie "Notturno/Mit meinen heißen Tränen - II: Im Reich des Gartens".
