ISTEP Program Overview

Educating, providing new knowledge, practicing state-of-the-art medicine, improving public health and shaping the future of our profession—AMA academic members help set the standards of excellence in our profession.

Through the newly formed Center for Transforming Medical Education, the AMA is working to bring about change across the continuum of medical education. There's no better example of this far-reaching work than the AMA-sponsored medical education research collaborative, Innovative Strategies for Transforming the Education of Physicians (ISTEP). ITSEP is undertaking a landmark, multi-school longitudinal cohort study on the medical education learning environment.

Likewise, AMA's commitment to improving clinical care and patient safety is exemplified through the work of the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI), the nation's preeminent physician-led, multi-specialty initiative dedicated to developing measures of quality and improving patient care. For more than a decade, the PCPI has been developing quality improvement measures that matter—for physicians and by physicians.

The AMA is committed to the highest standards in patient care and professionalism. Its members provide intellectual capital to meet the challenges of practicing medicine in the 21st century.
