More at http://www.theuptake.org. September 1, 2008. The RNC Free Speech Zone is about two blocks from the convention site. A large anti-war march wound through the streets to a triangle of land with about 50-100 counter-protesters. The two sides were up close and personal for about one city block. The path then led the march back through a series of tall, cage-like metal barricades and back out of downtown away from the convention. Police in riot gear were on scene the entire time. This is what roughly 10,000 people experienced in the streets of St. Paul while the police and other smaller groups clashed across downtown. Video by Chuck Tomlinson

  • The words "free speech zone" are tyranny.

  • Waving a freakin flag is not supporting the troops. Making sure they don't die for nothing is supporting the troops.

  • does it strike me as odd that the riot police look like combine from Half Life 2? By the time that happens you know our country is dead as a free country.

  • Republicans rock.

    DIE LIBERALS.

  • I am going to Pittsburgh this coming September. This whole idea of a Free Speech Zone PISSES me off. How in the world can you protest against something if you are not where the event is taking place? Total horse shit

  • Unfortunately, there is massive and mounting evidence that our government really deosnt care about our well being. In that, i want the federal gov to be as small as possible. There is no real hope in Obama, or McCain for that matter.

  • Every inch of this country should be a free speech zone. This practice was and is complete bullshit.

  • it is just sick that there are "zones" were speech is aloud. but it means that they are scared of us!

  • Free enterprise is a powerful motivation, but for it to operate in a manner in society that benefits both individual & society, free enterprise must have an honest referee overseeing the game so fair play and competition are ensured. Yes, those who work hard, play fair, and are both innovative as team players and individuals deserve the personal gains they have earned, but by the same token the public commons must be protected, and safety nets in place. When the game is rigged, we all loose.

  • What I want is Fair Play. The US Government is there to promote the general well-being, act on behalf of the betterment of all for the protection and improvement of the commons, and as an arbiter of fair play and protector of individual liberties against the pressures of those who wish to control society en-mass. Competition is one motivator among many; some are motivated by service to their nation; some are motivated by the joy of discovery; some by shared values more than personal gain.
