Box Score

Irvine, Calif. - Gerard Anderson scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds Wednesday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 72-61 Big West Conference victory at UC Irvine.

The Titans also got 15 points from Aaron Thompson and 14 points and 10 rebounds from Orane Chin to improve to 12-11, 6-5. UCI fell to 10-15, 3-8 despite 19 points by Eric Wise and 14 by Darren Moore.

Anderson scored 17 of his points in the second half to help Fullerton gradually pull away after a slow start. The Titans didn't get a field goal for more thann six minutes and saw a 28-24 halftime lead turn into a 32-31 UCI advantage at 15:16.

Anderson made his first of three second-half 3-point plays and put the Titans ahead for good at 34-32. Another Anderson 3-point play extended the advantage to 43-35 at 11:12 and the Titans soon opened a double-digit lead at 51-39 on a Thompson 3-pointer and UCI never got within a single digit again.

THe Titans, who were badly outrebounded in a loss on Saturday to UC Riverside, held a 42-29 advantage against the Anteaters, who managed only 5 offensive rebounds despite shooting only 41 percent.

"It was a whole different game on the boards tonight," said CSF Coach Bob Burton. "We were concerned with how we played the other night and were embarrassed. We did an outstanding job tonight and I don't know if we can play better defense.

"The rebounding started in the film rooom. If someone wasn't going to block out, they weren't going to be playing.

"We came together offensively in the second half.

"We're looking forward to our second game this week to see if we can sustain this."

Chin (8 pts.), Devon Peltier (6) and Jamel McGuire (1) gave the Titans' more points off the bench (15) in the first half than the 13 by the starters. Chin's double-double was his first and No. 3 for Anderson.

Fullerton plays Saturday night at Cal State Northridge, where it has won six in a row.

  • I was at the game! TITANS played tough from the start...game ball goes to Anderson but Chin, Thompson and Streeter played great. All about the F.
