If you hear voices that's the other people in our vehicle talking. On the far, far end of the herd/group of buffalo there was a jackel that kept trying to slip through so that it could get at the baby calf.
The other adult buffalo kept threatening it and keeping in from coming any closer though.
We were on a safari type ride at Lake Nakuru in Kenya, Africa when we turned the corner and saw some other vehicles stopped on the side of the dirt path. To our surprise it was a water buffalo calf that had JUST been born.
The mother still had afterbirth hanging off her and the little baby hadn't even gotten up yet. I didn't get the moment when it first stood up, but this video is from a couple seconds after that. These are its first few wobbly steps. Its so cuuuutttttteeee!!! :D
The baby was having a hard time so instead of helping it the mother would actually keep walking away. This encouraged it to get back up again because, of course, it wants to be closer to its mom.
Plus there was a jackel nearby that was obviously interested in the calf as well as a troop of baboons that kept coming closer and closer. Whether the latter would have done any harm to the baby is unclear, but the mother was nervous all the same.
Eventually we had to leave but I'm so happy that we have this video to watch and remember!
