Thats very interesting and you are right with the anti-clockwise spiral being associated to the sun but i think the clockwise spiral is more associated with the moon.
There have been no bodies found in the mound but there has been proof of cremation. The mound was most likely a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance.
The Spirals mimick the shadow that the sun casts upon the ground. If you track the sun's shadow as cast by a pointed stick, it will draw the 2 spirals... first inward, then back out again in the opposite direction. The lozenge or diamond represents the lattitude of the location. The 8 spheres over the door represent the 8 full (5 year) passings of the planet Venus, for a total of a 40 year period. This is not a burial mound but a birthing chamber for kings. Source: The White Goddess by Graves
wow nice! I live near a place called garden of the gods it's really beautiful rock formations we also have the cliff dwellings near by, where you can go and see where the mesa Indians used to live. Not nearly as old as the sites in ireland but nevertheless interesting. Oh I will come visit I promise!
I live in Drogheda which is in the Boyne valley and maybe 10 mins drive from newgrange. its amazing I must say. We are very lucky to have such I wonderful monument like this in Ireland. Its older than The pyramids . U really should visit....
