An update on the Concho River Project from Assistant City Manager Rick Weise.
Concho River Improvements is a half-cent sales tax-funded project of $13.5 million (including nearly $2 million in various grant funds).
Phase I of the project included dredging of 1.43 million cubic feet of silt from the North Concho River basin from Sulphur Draw upriver to 14th Street in 2010.
Phase II, to begin in October 2011, will include stabilization of the banks along public lands from Oakes Street upriver to the vicinity of Sulphur Draw, additional trails and trail improvements, new lighting, an outdoor exercise area, public art, new irrigation systems, shaded sitting areas, water features and other special elements.
The project is anticipated to take 18 months, with completion in the spring of 2013. Draining of the river will be required in sections to implement the project. Improvements are building on the creation of a downtown river corridor full of recreational opportunities as well as the provision of a unique and special place for residents and visitors alike.
