Italy, France, Romania and Hungary were among the countries mentioned prominently in the European Parliament's debate on press freedom on Wednesday. European Commissioner Neelie Kroes (Digital Agenda) said that the commission is not able to proper address violations of fundamental rights. She said the commission does have the capacity to take up these issues when they result in national-level infringements on European agreements.
Curbs on freedom of expression and information as well as government control of the media in several Member States came under the spotlight in a debate with the Commission on Tuesday night. Following a heated debate last autumn that highlighted the differing views on this topic among MEPs, Parliament rejected - on 21 October 2009 - all the motions for resolutions on press freedom in Italy and other Member States tabled by its various political groups. In a report published in July this year the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) voiced concern about press freedom in several EU countries.
Debating the issue in this video are:
- Manfred Weber, EPP, Germany;
- Andres Perello Rodriguez, Socialists & Democrats, Spain;
- Sonia Alfano, ALDE group, Italy; and
- Judith Sargentini, Greens/EFA, The Netherlands.
hahahhhahahah yeah cause unbiased and totally honest media really exists? well could someone refresh my memory and give me the name of a newspaper or news channel that isn't politically motivated or the mouth piece of multinational corporations and banks? cause i might have missed something.

MMMMM more empty threats! I bet Victor Orban & Silvio must be shaking in their shoes at the thought of the EU-debating brigade "Disapproving" of their behaviour. If they do not change there will probably be an EU committee meeting to issue more empty lectures on democracy! But nothing will happen, as usual. All talk no action.

The views of the 27 un-elected Kommissioners ( paid 13.7 million Euros a year by the taxpayers ) and their wanna-be "parliament" are not relevant to the voters of real democracies in the EU's 27 sovereign countries.....even though we are forced to fund them both with billions od Euros each year !
You can keep the money and your fat pensions but please..... mind your own business and leave us the little freedom we have left !
