Madrid Train Bombings

On 11 March 2004, between 7:30 and 7:45 AM, ten bombs detonated in four different locations on Madrid's C-2 commuter rail line at the height of the city's morning rush hour. The bombs killed 190 people and wounded more than 1,500. Each train was carrying an estimated 700 people, with an average of 100 people in each passenger car.

All of the affected trains originated from the Alcala de Henares station, located in the city of Alcala de Henares (about 8 miles east of Madrid), within fifteen minutes of each other. The bombs were emplaced between 07:00 AM and 07:15 AM, and were set to explode 35 minutes after being placed on the trains. Four bombs, which were left in bags at the front, middle, and rear of a single train, detonated on the platform of Atocha Station, a hub for both the subway line and commuter rail.

Three other bombs detonated on a stopped train, which was experiencing a two-minute delay, near Tellez Street, 500 meters outside of Atocha Station. The Tellez Street bombs exploded simultaneously with the ones on the Atocha Station platform.

Two more bombs detonated at Santa Eugenia Station and on a train at El Pozo del Tio Raimundo Station. All of the bombs detonated within two minutes of one another. Reports vary, but two or three additional devices were discovered unexploded.

Authorities allege that a Spaniard with ties to the mining community helped the terrorists obtain 200 kilograms of the Goma-2 Eco Dynamite used in the attacks, although the exact explosive used in these attacks remains unknown. By the end of March 2004, authorities had arrested 22 people in connection with the attack. The following month, Madrid law enforcement located a safe house associated with the suspected bombers. As authorities swarmed the apartment, the terrorists inside intentionally detonated explosives, killing themselves (seven suspected terrorists) and a police officer. Backpacks full of explosives, ten kilograms (22 pounds) of dynamite, and 200 detonators were found in the apartment wreckage.

I'm not trying to defend anyone here, because i knew a lot of people who were caught and killed in either the Twin Towers and the London bombings. However, these people just use religion as a reason to do these atrocities. I mean, look at the crusades. That was horrific, children, women etc were killed and they were probably tortured and this was in the name of Christianity. So, i'm not agreeing to this AT ALL! Don't take that impression on me. But the people who do this are extremists!

It is terrable. We don't walk into Muslin places and bomb them. I have been to the Atocha station (where this was) 11 years after the bombing. They redid it completly, but Muslims have NO rights to do this. I don't get it. This happened in Spain, and most Muslims are after Americans. Not many americans are in madrid. I have lived there, and nobody speaks english. I had to learn spanish.
