The original members of The 5th Dimension auditioned for Motown, but their brand of "sunshine soul" wasn't what Motown was looking for, and they were turned away. The group came to the attention of recording artist Johnny Rivers who had just started his own recording company called "Soul City", and he promptly signed them whereupon composer Jimmy Webb then delivered to them their breakthrough hit, "Up, Up And Away". The song peaked at #7 in June of 1967, the first of many hits for this group.
What beautiful harmonies.

As I said The version By Linda Kaye Henning used the same backing track as The Sunshine Company original, but with Linda's own vocal replacing those of Mary Nance and Maury Manseau who were the two lead singers of that group(but "sunshines" back up vocals remain on the track. The Sunshine Company original is here on You Tube, and Linda's previously unreleased version is own the brand new The Girls From Petticoat Junction CD: Sixties sounds

This song was not originally written for The 5th Dimension. It was written for, and originally recorded by The Sunshine Company for imperial records. The label then decided to cut a version by Linda Kaye Henning("Betty Jo"of Petticoat Junction fame) using the same backing track as The Sunshine Company original,When neither version caught fire, The 5th Dimension recorded it became a giant hit. A competing version by The Johnny Mann singers was a huge hit in England.

Well this may be just an urban legend, but supposedly Up Up And Away "originated" on Petticoat Junction! There are a handful of episodes from 1967 and '68 in which the Bradley sisters( the lineup of Linda Kaye Henning, Lori Saunders, and Meredith MacRae) perform the song, minus verse 2. The versions by The 5th Dimension,The Sunshine Company(which came BEFORE the 5th Dimensions' and The Johnny Mann singers are all supposedly covers of the "Junction original!
