Burkino Faso is one of the world's poorest nations, plagued by drought and disease. Yet its ethnically diverse population is determined to pull together and help themselves to change their situation.

Aline works up to eighteen hours a day to keep her four children in school. "Its a good feeling when you make enough money to educate the children." She is part of a women's group, who learn skills and exchange ideas. It is just one of several new grassroots initiatives driving development in Burkino Faso. Charity workers are overwhelmed by the nation's self-starting attitude: "I've seen the very poor conditions; it is remarkable they are able to take up a vision of the future".
