  • Ugh, my brain is giving up on me...

4 over 3... is that like playing quarter notes over a waltz time-signature?

But your example at 2:53 isn't in 3/4... but I hear a big rhythmic difference between the 2 examples.

  • @12x12surface no, it's playing 4 evenly spaced notes during the time of 3 quarter notes. The subdivision is dotted 8th notes, which has the duration of three 16th notes. Four times 3/16 equals 12/16. Which is the same as 3/4, so four dotted 8th notes is the same as three quarter notes. That's the math, but for it to be useful you need to be able to feel the rhythm of three going against four. First and foremost your body needs to be firmly connected with the quarter note pulse.

  • You're obviously using new finger gear that you forgot to review. Now everyone is going to want the same stuff. Please include references!

  • @800pieds haha, no, just cut my finger while slicing some avocado..

  • Again, what a a powerful but simple effective tool that can provoke so many ideas and motives. Thanks for amazing lessons as usual, Morten. I hear these kinds of lines not only with Chick but countless great players, especially Metheny and Stern

  • @lettmusic Thanks! Yeah, it's a really awesome concept! So easy, and so usable!

  • @MortenFaerestrand Please remove this comment. I'm already making millions by selling bandaid under the label "the secret to playing like Morten".

thanks... I didn't quite get the math you explained, but I did listen to your track over and over and over again to get the rhythm

It's a lot easier when I have my guitar with me to play along rather than trying to figure it out conceptually in my head - it messes me up.

    Thanks!
