My name is Leon Dekelbaum from Las Vegas. I've heard most of you talk about preserving the institution of marriage, but someone can get married at a drive through here. I'm wondering what specific steps you will take to lower the divorce rate.

  • The simple solution is don't get married. What is the real significance of marriage anyway. Someone please tell me!!!Why don't you just live with your partner without having the government involved in your personal business.

  • Um tax savings, citizenship, inheritance, rights to visit in the hospital, right to legally have joint property, guardianship if one of you gets ill, protection from a crazy family taking all your joint posessions, health insurance, social security benefits, medicare benefits, pensions, need I go on? It's a contract but has so many benefits behind it you could never replicate it by drawing up a document.

  • @process613 Yep you made an excellent point. All the reasons why the government has control over your most intimate relationship..the one you have with who you sleep with...terrible. Yes this is a problem but you just proved that our set up sucks. Hospital visits...when you are admitted you sign who can visit or you register trusted ones on some website for the future. Real estate issues can be handled by a will. There are ways to deal with theses issues. Divorce is expensive. Say no to paper!

  • The divorce rate is high due to many reasons: 1.Many marry for the wrong reasons 2. many marry at a young age or any age when still immature 3. marrying for lust withiut the base of friendship that is a crucial ground for marriage ( you have to be the best friend of your spouse w/ physical attraction and chemistry or else it will not work long term) 4. Unrealistic expectations of one another 5. some think they will own their partner after marriage, no it is not about ownership and many more....

  • With all those things you just stated there is a major factor that needs to be present. That major factor is TRUST between spouses. The divorce rate is so high because most men and women don't trust each other like they used to.Now, Women go into marriage thinking that it is going to be something like they see on TV or the movies. Then they are disappointed when the wedding day is over and they now realize that everything is back to normal.

  • how about never get married? Why are you so weak that you need another person in YOUR life? Im fine being single, all I need is my anime, porn, and drugs~~~

  • Government doesn't need to be meddling in marriage anyway. To answer your question... there is NOTHING that can lower the divorce rates. At least nothing any president can do. You can't force people to believe in the sanctity of anything.

  • We can keep the divorce rate from skyrocketing by keeping people from marrying their brothers, sisters and roommates simply for the benefits then getting divorced a few months or years later.

If we allowed Americans to spend their tax dollars as they choose on their children's educations then we may be able to instill values and morals and get that divorce rate to fall back down.

  • The question should be why we need "marriage" to begin with? Why can't people just stick to metaphorical "union" terminology. Even when it comes to procreation, parents willingness to stay together does not resolve from mere definition of "marriage" but rather many other various parameters.
