Ive only done threads on a cnc lathe (and with taps & dies ofc), seeing how much of a hassle it is on a manual lathe was refreshing.
On the cnc you do small pieces like this at 3-5k rpm , its done in 10 s :)

@DairyNZ I'm a big fan of learning by CAREFUL trial and error as well...
As far as reversing, I've done this also, but you need to watch if you have ANY slop whatsoever in your drivetrain/half-nut. If there is any backlash, when you reverse, it lags behind, so you still need to back the cross-slide out clear of the work until you get back past the start of the threads. When you switch back to forward, it will re-sync to the original side of the backlash, and everything is fine.
Anyone tell you that you sound like Jimmy Stewart? :)

Sir I hate to bug you with this question but I'm learning and don't have my How to run a lathe book yet. It's on it's way, I just won it on that ebay site. Would I do the same steps on my South Bend that your doing here. Pull the half nut lever when I reach the number on the indicator. Release it at the end and so on? Thanks again for your help.
