Today's top story is St. Mary's Hospital part fo the Bon Secours Virginia Health System celebrates its 45th birthday this year.

It does not seem that long but on January 9, 1966 Bon Secours held its ribbon cutting ceremony for St. Mary's Hospital. Back then Bon Secours Health System, Bon Secours Virginia Health Sytem and Bon Secours Richmond Health System were not yet formed.

St. Mary's opened its doors with 160 beds, a staff of 350, and a monthly payroll of only $30,000.

Did you know that the idea of St. Mary's Hospital was formed in 1961? Did you know that the first ground was broken in 1963? And did you know that St. Mary's was the first hospital in Richmond to open its door to all who needed Good Help....regardless of race or creed.

And while Bon Secours values were not yet written, they were inherent in the hearts and minds of our leaders then as they are now. Respect, justice, integrity, stewardship, innovation, quality, and growth.

St. Mary's saw their first expansion in 1970 with the addition of a new space for Radiology and an Emergency Department. Back then the sisters were very active in the operating rooms.

And St. Mary's continues to grow with the opening of the MRI Center, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an Expaned Emergency Department, the Medical Office Buildings South and West and a Pediatric Emergency Department...all in the 1990's.

Today St. Mary's Hospital enjoys the services of of more than 1,000 physicians, supported by nearly 3,000 employees. It is a 391 bed hospital that ranks in the top 5 percent in the nation for emergency serivces, stroke and critical care.

The hospital provides services from a wide range of specialties, including periatrics, neonatology, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cancer care and surgical weight loss.

And it doesn't stop there. St. Mary's future is glowing brightly. Bon Secours has embarked on a master planning process called a "charrette" to actively grow health care facilities and offerings in the Richmond community.

Through this holistic collaborative process, St. Mary's intends to recognize a future filled with hope.

Yes, St. Mary's Hospital is rooted in the past, standing in the present, and reaching for the future.

Please join us in congratulating Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital as they celebrate 45 years of providing Good Help to those in need.

Finally, patients are Schervier Pavillion have found a way to overcome these dreery days of non-stop rain in the mid-Atlantic states. How?

By participating is a multi-sensory activity know as Horticultural Therapy.

What is Horticultural Therapy? Well, Horticultural therapy is the engagement of a person in gardening-related activities, facilitated by a trained therapist, to achieve specific treatment goals.

In the case of the patient at Schervier Pavillion, they passed around aromatic herbs and reminisced and shared stories about how they used the herbs in the past...whether in the kitchen or in the medicine cabinet.

As it turns out people respond positively to green plants and colorful flowers. Gardening offers relief from physical and cognitive limitations, reduces stress, gently exercises aging or arthritic joints, and stimulates memory. And caring for plants inspires hope.

Something the residents at Mt. Alverno Center are well aware of.

Their Horticulture Therapy came indoors. Residents planted new containers to welcome visitors at the front entrance while learning about the the origins and culture of the plants.

So when you next visit Mt. Alverno Center, the pansies, mums and fountain grasses you see at the entrance were part of this cognitive therapy known as horticultual therapy.

You know...I think I might benefit from some of that right about now.

You can find out more about horticultural therapy and other happenings on Bon Secours Charity Health Systems blog.to get there, go to www.bschs.org and click their "BSCHS Blog" link under good sharing.

Well, that's it for this week. stay tuned to this portal for future up to the minute information on these and other stories on BSN Headline News. I'm Dave Schlachter. Thanks for joining us.
