Tool Right In Two guitar cover [HD]. A few mistakes/timing issues...but it wouldn't be one of my videos if it was perfect :). Small flub in the "solo" and I could have transitioned effects a little smoother when trying to get some feedback toward the end. Sorry for all the weird mouth moving. Apparently your brain tells your mouth to move....even when you are trying to make sounds with your hands.

I realize my sound isn't exactly like the studio track...especially in the beginning. I've said it before on other videos, but I like Adam's live sound and was trying for that. However, without amps cranked to 10 for tube saturation and speaker flutter and a large arena for natural reverb, I'm not likely to get a perfect match :). Don't know if this mix between the live sound/studio sound is pleasing to people, but I like it. Here's a cool vid of this song live...love the tone.

Finally found a mic that isn't coloring the sound. My Macbook mic isn't that great, the SM57 worked but was too quiet without a preamp, and the Samson Go-Mic wasn't much better than the mic in the Macbook. I'm not a fan of the "direct in" approach...I just want a decent mic that doesn't color the sound at all and is capable of capturing the backing track and my guitar the same as if you were just standing there listening. Finally found it. I'm using the Zoom Q3HD handheld digital video recorder. It's specifically made to capture live performances with good sound and HD video. Figured if this doesn't work, I don't know what will...but it does.

A pleasant "side effect" of using this new camera is the HD video. I wouldn't have gone through all of this just for HD....I'm more interested in what it sounds like...but the picture is nice, the guitar looks better, and you can see more clearly what's going on and how the song is played. Pretty cool, I think.

It's a little more inconvenient to record than the laptop as you can't see what's going on from in front. Next video, I'll move the camera back a bit so the guitar is more visible.

  • @andrewj8408 Hey, thank you very much :). Well, I started with tabs from Tooltabs dot net. Next is a mixture of watching live Tool footage found here on Youtube (very valuable), other people's covers (not all correct, like tabs), and my own ear. Hope this helps...good luck.
