Big Daddy Kill on Neptune's Bounty using only Telekinesis

Here's a cool way to kill the first Big Daddy that appears at the beginning of the Neptune's Bounty level in the PC video game, Bioshock. The idea here is to make maximum use of the Bioshock environment.

This must be executed the minute you enter the Lower Wharf area for the first time to take advantage of a scripted sequence where a Nitro Splicer always appears and starts hucking bombs at a Big Daddy who's lumbering along with a Little Sister.

The video pretty much explains it all but just for posterity, here's a written play-by-play since annotations are not yet supported in Youtube high quality videos yet:

1) Using Telekinesis, quickly grab and move the two oil barrels and the gas cylinder available near the entrance to a spot right next the door to Fontaine's Fishereries.

2) Jump under the wharf and zap-and-hack the machine gun turret. This will create a nice diversion.

3) After hacking the turret, position yourself behind the Big Daddy who at this point should just have come off the ramp leading down into the center of the Lower Wharf area.

3) A Nitro Splicer will appear in the Upper Wharf deck which looks down on the Lower Wharf area. (This is a scripted sequence, i.e., it always happens when you enter this area.) When he starts throwing bombs at the Big Daddy, use Telekinesis to catch them and throw them directly at the Big Daddy. This will set the machine gun turret shooting at the Big Daddy and will distract him while you continue to catch and throw the Nitro Splicer bombs at him.

4) After the Big Daddy destroys the machine gun turret, he'll kill the Nitro Splicer and then come after you or get distracted further by other Splicers in the Lower Wharf area (which is even better). If he comes after you, watch carefully for when he throws a proximity mine and then use Telekinesis to catch it but DON'T throw it back. Instead, carry it over to your pile of oil barrels and gas cylinders and stick it right in the middle. This will create a perfect little proximity trap with a lot of extra bang for your buck.

5) Run and position yourself behind the big mooring near the entrance to this area. This position will almost always induce the Big Daddy to return up the ramp and then strafe sideways toward the entrance to Fontaine's Fisheries trying to shoot you with the rivet gun. When he gets close enough to your trap, KABOOM.

One Big Daddy, medium rare.

NOTES:

I show two demos of this Big Daddy kill in the video. In the first demo, a couple of really amazing things happen...

First, around the 1:10 mark, when I threw one of the Nitro Splicer bombs at the Big Daddy, he just happened to be throwing a proximity mine at me and the two collided right in mid-air and exploded!

Second, around the 1:23 mark, the Big Daddy was way off in the distance fighting other Splicers who had gotten his attention (which is ideal). When he had thrown a proximity mine at another splicer, I managed to use Telekinesis to catch it before it hit the ground and suck it all the way back into my possesion. This demonstrates the incredible range of this plasmid (something I didn't know up until this point).

A few other things:

Why not just let the Nitro Splicer throw his bombs at the Big Daddy? Because most of the time, they just bounce harmlessly out of the way (I guess lunatics have terrible aim). I think it's better to milk this situation for all it's worth by protecting the splicer using the machine gun turret diversion and then catch his bombs and redirect them directly at the Big Daddy. Then it's all about your aim, not the splicer's aim. You can take off at least a third of the Big Daddy's health like this.

One thing I've always noticed about catching and throwing Big Daddy proximity mines: if you miss the Big Daddy when you throw it back, it's pretty much a wasted proximity mine (unless he wanders into its range). And then there's another problem I noticed when I first developed this Big Daddy kill technique is that trying to set off an explosive object trap on the fly at this distance by shooting it with your pistol can be a little precarious. The trap doesn't always go off when you want it to and sometimes the Big Daddy moves away from the trap before you can get it to blow.

Hence, killing two birds with one stone, I decided to use the proximity mine to set off the trap. No wasted mines and the trap goes off as soon as the Big Daddy gets close enough to it.

  • Ok I saw this segment and got so excited, because I was about to enter this same level. I thought, boy does that look fun, I think I could pull that off. Well, someone or something destroyed my collection of explosive barrels, my hacked turret was demolished, I accidentally shot big daddy while fighting with a splicer and I died a horrible, embarrassing death. Then the game asked me to uninstall it because I sucked.

  • what do you mean "no wasted mines" at 1:30 the big daddy throws one and you miss it and it goes untouched the whole video.

  • Note that by that point the trap had already been set. I didn't even need that mine he threw at 1:30. I was just trying to catch it for kicks. Wasted mines was referring specifically to the catch-and-throw back strategy.
