From the original 1949 Broadway cast recording of "South Pacific." This production won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; and won Tony Awards for Best Musical; Libretto; Best Original Score; Best Actor in a Musical (Ezio Pinza); Best Actress in a Musical (Mary Martin); Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Myron McCormick); Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Juanita Hall); Producer (Musical) (Hammerstein, Rodgers, Hayward, Logan); Best Director (Logan); and Best Scenic Design (Jo Mielziner). This track is from the LP pictured in the video above, Columbia Masterworks, serial number OS 2040.

  • While driving to New Haven Conn. for the first previews of South Pacific, Pinza was so unsure of himself in this musical, having just retired from the opera stage, he suddenly told his wife, he wanted to back out of this play and let the understudy do it. She said to him if it's the audience your afraid of, why not let them decide. He saw the logic of it, and the rest is history; he was the biggest hit of the show!
