Wolf's setting of a meditative poem written by Morike while contemplating a painting by Francesco Albani. The music on the video is in the original key, Fisher-Dieskau sings it transposed for medium voice. Sometimes the subtitles are too long and a word or two is missing.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore.

  • oh dear, my intention was not to sound pedantic. it's a lovely video, which is why I watched and listened to it with great pleasure. I just wanted to avoid possible confusion. Thank you, especially for your artistic translation (as opposed to pedantic :p).

  • Sorry, I'm a bit cranky in the morning. I'm sure it wasn't your intention. I've done a better job with Wolf's Abschied. The translation is a mixture of two different versions.

  • score in tenor key?

  • Yes, bravo for noticing! though some other 'nice' comment would have made you sound less pedantic! especially since you have uploaded nothing yourself to date. It's the only score I have, and it took well over an hour of scanning cutting and pasting fitting in to the music and adding the subtitles. I know I can do it better.... but is it worth while? Did it give you any pleasure or insight?

  • Actually it's the Dover edition, it doesn't specify any voice register, so I guess it is the original key.

  • Does this give anyone else shiver? It's so beautiful! And dieskau-fischer seen perfect for this. I've heard others sing it, and prefer his recording to all of them. No?

  • great gesture! notes, lyrics and translation in one sight

it really helps to get the music!

  • What a sublime piece...

  • @CzarDodon The recording is one third lower, in D Major, for "low voice" (Tiefe Stimme Ausgabe)

  • @CzarDodon The video is great - thank you for all the hard work!

This is the original key for soprano or tenor - Fischer Dieskau sings a lower key of course. Anyway it's great to see the score, even though it's higher as what it sounds. You get an idea :)

    THANKS!

  • Terrific video, Fischer-Dieskau is superb. regards

  • There is so much extraordinary about this performance. The rubato, the forward motion toward the climax, the soft upper register, the smooth legato phrasing. The last phrase with its concentration, control of vibrato, clear diction. Artistry of the highest order.

  • exceptional. Wolf and Fischer Dieskau..

  • ich weine

  • this is great!
